Research into Practice
Bridging Theory and Application in Family Law
Research Applied
R2P (Research into Practice) is a small group gathering that focuses on plunging into the literature surrounding a particular topic in family law. Two or three articles are shared with the group prior to the gathering, and attendees are asked to consider:
- What stood out / surprised you from the readings?
- What questions and observations do you have from the readings?
- How can you take the author’s thoughts and apply it in your practice?

25.09 R2P Who Gets the Pet
In this R2P event we will look at the literature with respect to pets. In 2023 the Australian Family Law was reformed to make clear that, while a pet remains a consideration in a financial and property settlement, there are clear principles that should be considered in defining who gets the pet.
Other jurisdictions regard pets as part of the family and along with children, there is a consideration of arrangements that will maintain some sort of contact arrangement between the pet and all of the family members. How do we make this work in the dispute resolution processes? What difference would it make if pets were regarded as family members?

25.10 R2P Infant Informed Practice
Over the last few years Jenn MacIntosh and her colleagues have considered the impact of infant development within intact and separated families. In 2023 the Family Law reform in Australia required the court to consider the “Developmental Needs of the Child” when determining what is in the Chlid’s Best Interest. In this R2P we will look at the concepts and principles associated with Developmental Needs. What difference can this make in discussions with separated parents? How could the voice of the infant be brought forward to parents?
